Title Reference: "Between the devil and the deep blue sea" is a phrase meaning a dilemma; to choose between two undesirable situations. It's equivalent to the phrase "between a rock and a hard place". It is also the title of a 1931 song by Cab Calloway, written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler.
